Tuscany - Wine, Food and Culture

Our trip begins in Siena with our local cultural guide. We'll explore the city and its history, art, architecture, museums, city life and the delicious food, cucina Toscana, in trattorias, cafés, bars and restaurants where one can appreciate the hum of daily life . We will stay in a luxurious four-star hotel in the heart of the city. There will be plenty of opportunity to explore and visit shops that feature artisanal food, leather, craft and fashion, and mingle with locals for aperitivo hour.
We'll continue on by bike and coach to the famed wine town of Montalcino, where we will have an insider’s perspective of Tuscan vineyard life from one of Brunello di Montalcino consortium's oldest vintners, Il Poggione. We’ll taste several vintages of their spectacular wines, dine in their village's rustic trattoria, featuring classic Tuscan vegetable, game and pasta dishes, all created with respect for the region’s rich culinary history.
From there we will continue north through the countryside by bike and coach, stopping to visit pecorino cheese producers, pasta makers, honey harvesters, vintners and country trattorias specializing in the region’s delicious truffles. Visits to local artisans crafting pottery, glass and leather goods are easily arranged.
We will then spend two days at Badia a Coltibuono, a monastery dating to the twelfth century. One of the pre-eminent producers of Chianti Classico wine, it is also home to the cooking school overseen by Lorenza dé Medici di Ottajano. You will have the opportunity to attend a day’s cooking class, cycle into the Arno River valley or hike the extensive forest trails with our guide and discover a landscape and architecture seemingly untouched by time.
On our final day we will cycle through the forested ridges of upper Chianti, stopping for a wonderful trattoria lunch in the village of Strada di Chianti before descending into Florence for a late afternoon visit to the Uffizi Gallery, an aperitivo in one of the city’s elegant grand cafes, dinner at an excellent Florentine restaurant we recently discovered with local friends and finally, overnight in a very comfortable and luxurious city center hotel. The following morning our driver will take you to the airport for your flight’s departure, or you may consider exploring Firenze on your own for a few days.
